This course is open to all doctors and will look at the factors involved in safety in healthcare and how to respond to these factors. This course has been approved for continuing professional development credits. You can start this course today! This course can be completed at your convience at any time. Certificates for this course will be generated online upon successful completion of all requirements.

This course may take up to 12 hours to complete. By the end of this course you will:

  • review the key issues that are relevant to Patient Safety in the Irish healthcare system and the prevalence of problems

  • understand the importance of learning from past misadventures

  • understand the individual and systems approaches to defining errors and the importance of reporting adverse events and near misses

  • examine why adverse events and near misses can occur and how lessons learnt from them can prevent injury to future patients

  • recognise drivers, barriers and the steps involved in implementing meaningful open communication in responding to adverse events

  • understand the prevalence of medical errors and adverse events and develop strategies to deal with the impact of error in supporting colleagues recovering from the emotional impact of error

  • investigate the process of risk management and your professional obligation to identify and report near misses and adverse events

  • learn how to accurately complete an incident report form, the key elements of an incident review and the importance of risk management as an everyday activity
