Particulate Solids Handing and Processing

Course details

The importance of knowledge of the science of particulate materials to the process industries cannot be over-emphasized. Particulate solids represent 50-80 % of materials used or produced by typical large process industrial companies, as well as metal, mineral, food, pharmaceutical and other industries. In spite of this, particulates are poorly described and understood, and few universities and colleges are offering this subject as part of their curriculum. This course is intended as an introduction to particulate solids handling and processing.

The topics included have been selected to give coverage of the broad areas of particle technology: particle size analysis, packed and fluidized beds, storage, size reduction and enlargement, separation (filtration and gas cyclones). For each of the topics studied, the fundamental science involved is introduced and this is linked, where possible, to industrial practice. 

Course Objectives

• Understand the role of particle technology in the process industry
• Understand the basic principles necessary for the selection and design of key unit operations involved in handling, storing, transporting and processing particulate solids.
• Gain a basic understanding of the ways in which particulate solids behave which, when applied, have the potential to minimize processing problems, resulting in less downtime, improvements in quality control and environmental emissions.

Who Should Attend

The course is targeted at engineers, scientists and technicians working in process industries where particulate solids are handled and processed (for example in the food processing, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, oil, chemical, mineral processing, metallurgical, detergent, power generation, paint industries).
