    Course details

We all want to ensure that people with life-limiting conditions experience the best possible quality of life. The Palliative Care Needs Assessment Guidance is one way to help health and social care professionals achieve this goal. It serves as a framework that enables staff build a holistic picture of patient and family needs and strengths.

    Module breakdown

The palliative care needs assessment module is pided into two sections with section one being an e-learning component and section two a workshop.

The e-learning component – occurs on a learning platform where two lessons are provided on the fundamentals of palliative care, personcentred care, communication and facilitation. The platform is currently hosted by the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care and can be accessed on http://learningplatform.thepalliativehub.com/ under ‘other education providers’ and the link will shortly be available to all. Applications for CPD credits are in process by the HSE.

Section 2 Workshop - Milford care centre are hosting this two day faceto-face workshop providing participants with knowledge and skills in facilitating workplace learning building on learning from the platform component.

In order to deliver the programme facilitators are required to undertake the education module and then deliver it to key staff working in clinical areas. Key staff who have expressed an interest and have the necessary authority to engage colleagues in their own workplaces will support their colleagues to comprehensively assess palliative care needs that engage with all four domains of assessment as outlined in the guidance document.

To become a facilitator participants must attend both components. However, anyone who wishes to simply advance their knowledge and skills in palliative care needs assessment and person-centredness is welcome to visit the learning platform and complete the online lessons only.

    Target audience

The target audience for this programme are staff from any discipline who are in a palliative care link role (level 1 or 2), or prepared to be a champion for palliative care, or have a particular interest in or designated as part of their role, to promote palliative care principles and assessment of need in their own workplace.
