An operating system is a layer of system software that, at least in the current implementations:

It offers an abstract description of the hardware, permitting a unified access to it even on different computers.It manages the computer resources as the memory in a portable way, meaning that your program can run unmodified on many different computers (with some limitations) as the resources are managed in a defined and known way by the operating system itself.

It manages the tasks the computer must perform, enabling many contemporaneous programs, or better tasks and threads, to use the same computer giving to each of them the impression that they are the only task in execution.It manages the local communication between the computer and the peripherals and the wider communication between different computers, even running different operating systems.
