Course details
This competency unit provides the participants with the fundamental and practical development in the operations of pumps and its associated equipments according to standard operating procedures safely to minimise hazards. It also instructs participants on how to respond to abnormal conditions of pump operations. This competency encompasses the safe and effective operation of pumps and associated pumping equipment currently used in production and processing plants.
COURSE TOPICS
TOPIC 1
OPERATE PUMPS ACCORDING TO STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
- Principles and theory of operation of various pumps and associated equipment
- Safe de-isolation and pre-commissioning of pump
- Standard operating procedures for pre-start checks and start up
- Standard operating, monitoring and controlling under normal conditions
- Standard operating procedures for normal shutdown
- Emergency shutdown procedures
- Purging, venting and draining of pumps
TOPIC 2
OPERATE FLUID CONTROL DEVICES
- Principles and theory of valves and associated pumping equipment
- Standard operating procedures for pre-start, starting, shutdown, operating and monitoring, controlling and under normal conditions
- Identification of abnormal conditions, methods of correction and troubleshooting
- Design of different types of pump couplings and drivers
TOPIC 3
RESPOND TO ABNORMAL CONDITIONS
- Correct process/production specifications
- Manufacturer’s operating specifications
- Abnormal conditions
- Methods for correction and troubleshooting
- Emergency and critical actions
TOPIC 4
MINIMIZE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH PUMPS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT
- Relevant regulations and safe working practices and procedures required within work area
- Types of hazards involving processes, equipment and materials during pump start up, shut down and normal running
- Selection of correct PPE such as eye/hearing protection, footwear, hard hats, gloves and respirators
- Safety assessment methods and techniques in risk assessment
- Actions to minimize risk from hazards (permit to work)
- Safety reporting procedures and documentation for own work area
- Determining the hazards identification and risk minimization methods associated with fluid control devices
PRE-REQUISITES
Candidates must be able to:
- Understand and speak English
- Demonstrate maths proficiency
- Successfully complete an assessment test conducted by CPTC

CERTIFICATION
