Occupational Therapy Assistant (Health Services Skills)

Course details

This Health Service Skills certificate with an emphasis on occupational therapy assistant provides training for care assistants and occupational therapy assistants and equips them with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. Students gain a knowledge of the theory and principles of occupational therapy practice, and of the role of the occupational therapy assistant in the implementation of therapeutic programmes. Students learn about human occupation, growth and development and become familiar with the elements of activities of living. They develop the skills and techniques to assist a patient/client in the activities of living in order to enhance their quality of life. The Occupational Therapy Assistant also learns the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control.

Occupational therapists help people who have problems with their physical or mental health. Their aim is to maximise their clients independence at home and with their working and social lives. They assess needs, and plan and carry out activities that help people to look after themselves.

Entry Requirements

• Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. Acceptance to Full Time courses is interview based, there are no specific points requirements.
