Course details

On completion participants can:

  • Know what equipment and PPE to use,
  • Be able to identify what precautions to take,
  • Deal with emergencies and develop a safe working code of practice within the organisation.
  • Understand relevant legislation

Who should attend:

The following personnel should participate: Managers, supervisors, senior technicians and operators and those who are responsible for any type of team management or supervision in all industrial disciplines.

Course Outline

Day 1: Sources of risk and safety hazards when working around industrial installations:

  • Development of risk management
  • Company's risk management objectives
  • Hazard identification - what constitutes a hazard degree of hazard needing immediate attention limited hazards
  • Case Study based on realistic examples from trainers background
    - Area classification

Day 2: Your Legal Duties

  • Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
  • The Management of Health and Safety at work Regulations 1992
  • Workshop: What responsibilities to you personally have for safety within the company.
  • Statutory requirements - the training you must provide
  • following risk assessment - you must decide what safety procedures are necessary

Control of Contractors

  • employer's responsibility
  • choosing competent contractors
  • Group Activity developing an approved code of practice for your area

Day 3 : Basic Safety for Equipment and Personnel 
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • choosing and using PPE
  • care, maintenance and storage of PPE

Testing Portable Powered Equipment

  • what is portable powered equipment?
  • who should test it and how often?

Display Screen Equipment Regulations

  • workstation analysis, Work Related Upper Limb Disorders

Day 4 :

  • Equipment and facility inspection
  • Developing a sound safety system including safety checks and regular audits
  • Precautions and protection
  • Common operations and safe mode of operation
  • Define the Basics of the Permit to Work System
  • Potential emergency scenarios - historical examples

Day 5:

  • Ergonomics - principles, methods and techniques
  • Involving the end users in the design process
  • Health problems associated with poor ergonomics - musculoskeletal disorders, stress
  • Workshop - Designing the work, work tools and the work place for greater
  • efficiency and reduced risk
    - Applying and implementing ergonomics
