Course details

Nutrition and Diet is suitable for all those who wish to achieve an understanding of the principles of good nutrition and healthy living, or to enhance an existing knowledge. It will be of interest to those who eat healthily and wish to know more about diet and nutrition, and/or are interested in sharing their knowledge about diet and nutrition with others. The course will cover a wide variety of topics from the digestive system and vegetarianism to eating disorders and personal dietary plans.

Entry Requirement

There are no formal academic entry requirements but having an interest in diet and nutrition is essential. This programme is suitable for those requiring an understanding of the importance of diet and nutrition or those responsible for diet and nutrition such as catering providers, diet and nutrition consultants, carers, food retail etc.

Examinations

This is a very practical module and you will be asked to complete an assessment such as designing a personal dietary plan.

Course Content

This course concentrates on exploring the key details about our digestive systems, good nutrition, important dietary nutrients, vitamins and minerals, role of fluids, weight loss, vegetarianism, nutritional requirements of the young, special dietary needs, eating disorders and personalised diet plans.

This course aims to introduce good nutrition and understand the function of nutrients in our body, the effects of weight loss on health and the risks of rapid weight loss methods. The nutritional requirements of vegetarians, young people and groups with special dietary needs (diabetes, heart disease, allergies and asthma) are also considered.

This is a very practical module, in that it asks you to design a personal dietary plan, taking into account all the personal details of the person you are designing the plan for. It may be for yourself or for someone you are advising about diet and nutrition. Included in your plan will be suggestions and ideas for meals, and advice on keeping food and exercise diaries, so that any goals may be successfully achieved within a given time frame.

Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) is an institute of higher education in Limerick, a modern urban city in the Mid-Theyst region of Ireland and is one of 13 institutes that are members of the Institutes of Technology, Ireland (IOTI).
