This workshop covers all aspects of successful nut cultivation in Ireland. While the main focus of the workshop is on cobnuts (commercial cultivars of the common hazelnut), other nuts covered in the workshop include walnuts, heartnuts, and sweet chestnut. Both walnuts and sweet chestnut are already successfully grown in many parts of Ireland.

Course Content:

This workshop covers all aspects of successful nut cultivation in Ireland. While the main focus of the workshop is on cobnuts (commercial cultivars of the common hazelnut), other nuts covered in the workshop include walnuts, heartnuts, and sweet chestnut. Both walnuts and sweet chestnut are already successfully grown in many parts of Ireland.

The workshop includes site and soil assessment, site enhancement and development, choice of species and varieties, pollination, planting, pruning, feeding and maintenance, and nut tree propagation. The workshop also examines the commercial opportunities for nut crops. Empasis is on organic and sustainable methods of production (low embodied energy, low waste, non-chemical methods of disease control).

This is the only nut-growing workshop to be run in Ireland. Detailed workshop notes provided.

The workshop will take place at one of Ireland\\\'s recently established large-scale nut orchards.

About National Organic Training Skillnet

Theylcome to the Theybsite of the National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS). They provide high quality, low cost training for the expanding organic sector throughout the Republic of Ireland, NOTS will be providing a range of courses throughout the country.

The NOTS training programme is available to farmers, groTheyrs, processors, food businesses, and consultants working in the organic food sector. New entrants and commercial producers interested in developing their enterprise into an organic business are also eligible.

In addition to training, They are keen to facilitate organic producers and processors into networks that can address issues and opportunities for the sector. Events such as farm walks and local group meetings will be held nationwide.

They are managed through a steering group which has representation from Theystern Organic Network, and organic certification bodies IOFGA and Organic Trust.
