Programme Overview

This programme leads to a qualification in Pre-Nursing. It is designed to give a solid foundation in the theory and practice of Nursing Care for those who intend to enter the nursing, paramedical or community care service.

  • Learners are responsible for finding thier own work experience placement in hospitals, nursing homes etc. for one day per week on work.

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants must have passed the Leaving Certificate, LCA or equivalent.
  • Holders of a QQI Level 4 Award are also eligible to apply.
  • Mature learners (over 23) may be exempt from the above academic requirements.
  • Places on the programme are limited and will be allocated on the basis of a personal interview.

Employment/Progression Opportunities

  • Holders of this Award are eligible to apply, through the CAO to Universities and Institutes of Technology for entry to the first year of Nursing Degree Programmes (through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme).
  • Holders of this Award are eligible to apply through UCAS, for UK universities offering the Nursing Degree programmes.
  • Award holders are qualified to work as healthcare assistants in a variety of health and community settings.

Limerick College of Further Education is a long-established, state-funded and administered further education college. It is one of many centres of education run by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. LCFE was known until 2008 as Limerick Senior College.

LCFE offers Further Education (Post Leaving Certificate) programmes and Professional qualifications in a variety of disciplines and caters for approximately 1200 full-time and 3000 part-time learners. Its campuses are situated in the South-East of the city on Mulgrave Street (a short distance from the city centre) and also in East Limerick at Cappamore.
