Course details

If you are interested in a career in human resource management, trade unions or management consultancy, this MSc programme is for you. You will examine the nature of work and explore employment relations and human resource management in changing national and international markets. The focus is on the people aspect of business and explores how the relationship between employers and employees can be managed to the best advantage of both parties.

It is one of a small number of Irish programmes accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development CIPD, the professional body for human resource practitioners.

Our faculty includes research leaders in the subject areas of human resource management, employment relations and international management ensuring that the material delivered reflects the latest thinking in industry. Faculty and students are actively involved with the Western Region branch of CIPD providing networking opportunities with HR professionals. When you successfully complete this programme, you can become a member of CIPD, the professional body for human resource practitioners. Graduates are invited to join the alumni network with over 150 members. Our alumni post job opportunities, act as guest speakers and provide a supportive community of practice.

Key facts

Entry requirements

Successful applicants generally received a good Second Class Honours degree in business, management or a related discipline. Experience is also considered.

Additional requirements:

  • A personal statement explaining your reasons for choosing this programme
  • An IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent for international students
  • An interview if requested

Course outline

This programme is designed to help you to develop a thorough knowledge and applied competence in the fundamentals of employment relations and human resource management.

First semester modules lay the foundation. They include:

  • Global Business and HR in Context
  • Leading, Managing and Developing People
  • Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility*
  • Employment Relations and Law
  • Research Methods

Second semester modules provide an in depth examination of HR policy areas. They include:

  • Reward Management
  • Learning and Development
  • International HRM
  • European Labour Markets*

*There are two optional modules. Students can choose either Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility taught during Semester 1 or European Labour Markets, taught in May at the Toulouse Business School. All other modules are compulsory.

You will begin your research project on a topic that you choose during the second semester and complete it by the end of July. If you plan to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) the professional body for HR practitioners, you will also complete a professional development log during your year of study.

Requirements and assessment

Continuous assessment is a feature of each module. You will complete essays, projects and presentations working individually and in groups. There are final examinations for most modules at the end of each semester.
