Course details
The purpose of this pre-apprenticeship course is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence required to independently and under supervision carry out diagnostic, maintenance and installation procedures on electronic and mechanical components utilised within the motor technology sector and or to progress to further or higher education or training. It aims to give students a broad knowledge of the work practices involved in car mechanics and car maintenance.
The Motor Trade is a fast paced rapidly changing and challenging environment in which there are many career opportunities. The skills and knowledge acquired on this course are invaluable to anybody wishing to enter the trade or even to those who will just own a car.
Award
Successful completion of this course will result in a FETAC/QQI Level 5 Certificate in Motor Technology, 5M2145.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied. For mature students (over 23) these requirements need not apply and applications will be considered based on a proven interest in the motor trade. Places are limited and entry is subject to interview.
Course Duration
This is a one year full time course running from September to May.

Motor Vehicle Theory
This module provides the necessary mechanical background knowledge to complement unit 1 of Motor Vehicle Practice. It introduces the learner to the various mechanical components of a motor vehicle.
Auto Electricity
This module is designed to introduce learners to the electrical principles associated with components found in a modern motor vehicle. It provides the learner with the knowledge for unit 2 of Motor Vehicle Practice.
Motor Vehicle Practice
This module has been designed so that the learner will acquire basic skills to carry out a range of maintenance tasks, associated with a motor vehicle, safely and efficiently.
Communications
Students will learn a variety of communication skills including oral presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, discussion & negotiation skills, internet & e-mail skills as well as structured report writing, document preparation and non-verbal communication techniques.
Work Experience
Each student will develop their job seeking skills to secure work experience one day per week, commencing in November, in a garage environment. Students will be trained in CV preparation an interview skills, and will be required to research employment legislation as part of their assessments. They will also be required to undertake a career investigation in their vocational award area.
Engineering Workshop Processes
In this module, students will be working with various engineering equipment including Lathe, Pillar Drill, CNC Lathe, Arc Welder, MIG Welder, etc. Students will also work with hand tools marking out equipment to fabricate components out of various engineering materials including aluminium, brass, copper, mild steel and different types of plastic.
Electronics
With the ever increasing amount of electronics that are in modern cars, this module will give stuents a grounding in the construction of electrical circuits and discover where they are used in cars and other electrical appliances.
Safety & Health at Work
This module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in the working environment. Emphasis will be placed on safety within the dynamic environs of a garage workshop.
Mathematics Level 5 (Optional)
For those wishing to pursue further studies at third level, this module is essential.
Careers & Progression
Students may opt to continue their education in Institutes of Technology through the higher education links scheme, or seek employment directly in the motor trade.
