Course details
This course provides the participant with the fundamental knowledge and practical understanding in monitoring and operations of process equipment. It covers monitoring and recording critical process variables and responding correctly to adjust process parameters to achieve specified output and quality requirements according to the standard operating procedures. On completion of this unit, participant will be able to apply, demonstrate and practise skills learnt to monitor and operate the process operations.
COURSE TOPICS
TOPIC 1
MONITOR CRITICAL PROCESS VARIABLES
- Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within the work area (PPE, environmental, emergency response and codes of practice)
- Critical parameters (high pressure, temperature, level, flow, amps) as prescribed in the standard operating procedures
- Critical situations (uncontrolled spillages/emissions)
- Plant and equipment symbols on a schematic diagram (P&IDs)
TOPIC 2
OPERATE CRITICAL PROCESS VARIABLES
- Actions to take during a critical situation (emergency shutdown, plant and equipment switch over, returning process to normal parameters)
- Automatic and manual emergency shutdown plans and procedures (loss of utilities, feed stock, problems on nearby or connecting units, plants or systems)
- Reporting procedures and documentation required for critical situations
TOPIC 3
ADJUST PROCESS PARAMAETERS TO ACHIEVE SPECIFIED OUTPUT AND QUALITY REQUIREMENTS
- Actions to take during a critical situation (emergency shutdown, plant and equipment switch over, returning process to normal parameters)
- Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within the work area (PPE, environmental and process specifications)
- Process parameters (flow rates, throughput)
- Process specifications (quality)
- Actions to take during a process parameter upset (plant and equipment switch over, start up, returning process to normal parameters)
- Process parameters during, loss of utilities, feed stock, problems Reporting procedures and documentation required for out of specification production and throughput targets
TOPIC 4
MONITOR PROCESS SYSTEMS, ACCORDING TO STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
- Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within the work area (PPE, environmental, process specifications, codes of practice and SDS information regarding chemicals such as caustic, ammonia)
- Process parameters (steady state conditions)
- Process specifications (ph, density, concentrations)
- Reporting procedures and documentation required for normal steady state conditions
TOPIC 5
OPERATE PROCESS SYSTEMS, ACCORDING TO STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
- Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within the work area (PPE, environmental, process specifications, codes of practice and SDS information regarding chemicals such as
- caustic, ammonia)
- Procedure for taking samples.
- Actions to take during normal running (routine inspections/ checks housekeeping)
- Reporting procedures and documentation required for sample results
TOPIC 6
PARTICIPATE IN REVIEWING PROCESS OPERATING PROCEDURES
- Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within work area (PPE, environmental, process specifications and codes of practice)
- Standard operating procedures for pre-start, starting, shutdown, operating and monitoring, controlling and under normal conditions
- Process parameters information
- Process/production specifications
- Audit and review of standard operating procedures
- Abnormal conditions and methods for correction and troubleshooting (company practice)
- Details of 1st line maintenance information
PRE-REQUISITES
Candidates must be able to:
- Understand and speak English
