Course details

This course module aims to provide students with knowledge of advanced coating technologies for corrosion preventions. The module covers electrochemical, sol-gel, vapour, thermal and plasma based coating processes together with their applications in corrosion prevention. This will enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills on advanced coatings technologies for corrosion prevention which is essential for different industrial sectors and users. The module is structured to enhance both the knowledge and skills of participants with lectures, case studies, hands-on-sessions, and experimental work on advanced coating technologies conducted in the well-equipped process and testing laboratories at SIMTech. Case studies of real corrosion problems in different industrial applications will also be used to enhance students understanding on the advantages of advanced coating technologies for corrosion prevention.

Why This Course

At the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Select and justify a suitable cathodic protection process for specific industrial applications
  • Describe different anodising processes and their applications for corrosion resistance
  • Use coatings in corrosion prevention, including the application of nanomaterials in coatings
  • Select cleaning methods prior to coating application
  • Identify coating deposition and curing methods
  • Understand basic operations in various coating depositions
  • Perform coating test and characterisation with standard methods

What You Will Learn

All the coatings and processes taught in the module will be mainly based on technologies developed in SIMTech, with hands-on experiments in the labs.

The module will cover three broad areas:

  • Electrolytic and chemical coating processes for corrosion prevention:It will cover chrome-free conversion coatings, advances in acceptable industry practices on cathodic protection, passivation and anodising, electro and electroless plating processes.
  • Sol gel process-based coatings:This will cover a number of organic/inorganic hybrid nano-composite coatings applicable to corrosion prevention and its relevant processes.
  • Vapour/thermal and plasma process-based coatings:It will cover coatings and processes by PVD, CVD, thermal spray, and plasma treatment
