Course details

The purpose of this course is to provide people with the required skills to obtain roles as Manufacturing Technicians. Following completion of the study modules, students will be be placed with local Medical Device companies in Technician roles. Student selection will be by interview (following assessments) by GMIT and the Irish Medical Device Association who are arranging the placements.

GMIT is the largest provider of Springboard/ ICTSkills courses in the West of Ireland, with 290 approved places across 12 courses in 2015. Of the 70 Springboard / ICT Skills places that were approved for GMIT in 2013,  a year later 70 people had completed internship and over 60 people were in paid employment. Similar results are expected for this course, which is being run for the first time this year.

Programme Modules

The modules that will be undertaken are all taken from the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. GMIT is currently providing an upskilling programme for the Irish Medical Device Association which includes these modules plus the remaining modules from Years 1 & 2 of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. Participants may be eligible to complete Years 1 & 2 of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering through the the Irish Medical Device Association upskilling programme.

Manufacturing Engineering 1 - 10 Credits, at NFQ Level 6

  •  Electrical Science -  5 Credits, at NFQ Level 6
  •  Computer Aided Design  - 10 Credits, at NFQ Level 6
  •  Mathematics 1 - 10 Credits, at NFQ Level 6
  •  Learning and Innovation Skills - 5 Credits, at NFQ Level 6
  •  Transitioning to Work - 5 Credits, at NFQ Level 6
  •  Internship/ Work Placement - 10 Credits, at NFQ Level 6

To properly prepare students for transitioning to employment, they will also undertake the accredited module

"Transitioning to Work" (5 Credits - Level 7).

Following completion of the study modules, students will be placed by the Irish Medical Device Association with local medical device companies in technician-type roles.
