Course details

This Masters programme allows the students to specialize in the widely established area of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering or to widen their knowledge from their undergraduate studies.

This programme introduces the use of advanced Computer Aided Engineering tools and by experiencing these advanced techniques and software, the graduate will gain a vital edge. It allows the candidate to keep up with the rapidly changing manufacturing and design sectors. In addition, students can opt for a specialist Major in Sustainable Systems/Energy or Biomedical Engineering.

Major in Sustainable Systems/Energy

There is a growing international market for Engineers in sustainable energy and development, eco-innovation, resource efficiency and clean-tech sectors. There are lots of career opportunities in the growing fields of Energy/Renewable Energy (wind, wave, solar, biomass etc.); a national priority area for Ireland.

Major in Biomedical Engineering

This discipline integrates the necessary aspects of biology and medicine with the technical engineering aspects required to engineer medical devices. The world of medicine is evolving and expanding rapidly, with new treatments and new diseases appearing all the time. As Ireland is a major player in Bioengineering, this Major provides graduates with specialisms required by industry.

There are three exit routes: MEng, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To inspire mechanical and manufacturing engineers to become competent and adaptable in the application of computer techniques in engineering.
  • To enhance the student's knowledge, understanding and skills in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Programme Structure:

The MEng programme is a one-year (full-time) level 9 Master programme. It is also offered in part-time mode (over two years). There is one-intake on to the programme, in September each year. For students who are studying part time, the mode of delivery is remote/ guided study. Pat time students are free to attend lectures, labs and tutorials, however, these are all scheduled during normal business hours of Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm.

For the MEng award, modules with a total of 90 credits should be accumulated: eight 7.5 credit modules, plus a project worth 30 credits developed in the summer period.

The normal exit qualification from the programme is an MEng degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. However, there exist two alternative exit awards: Graduate Diploma (60 credits) and Graduate Certificate (30 credits).

For students who do not meet the direct entry requirements for the MEng programme, the School offers several alternative entry routes:

Access Course to the MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

The Access Course is an alternative entry route to the MEng programme for students who do not have a primary degree in Mechanical and/or Manufacturing Engineering, but have a level 8 Bachelor degree in a science/technology/other engineering based area. It is a one-year part-time course.

Qualifier Programme A for the MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

The Master Qualifier Programme A is an alternative entry route to the MEng programme for students who have a level 7 degree in Mechanical and/or Manufacturing Engineering and several years of relevant work experience. It is a one-year part-time course.

Qualifier Programme B for the MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

The Master Qualifier Programme B is an alternative entry route to the MEng programme for students who have a level 8 H3 degree in Mechanical and/or Manufacturing Engineering. It is a one-year part-time course.

International Foundation Programme

The International Foundation Programme is an alternative entry route to the MEng programme for students who are non-native English speakers and do not meet DCU's language requirements. It is a one-year full-time course.

Why DCU:

  • You can study part-time and remotely for maximum flexibility.
  • There are two intakes to the programme, September and February.
  • A modern, state of the art building with excellent teaching, laboratory, workshop and computing facilities.
  • Completion of the programme will open up improved employment opportunities.
  • Provides an excellent preparation ground for Ph.D research.

Career Prospects:

The focused nature of the majors, combined with the continued growth of these important and very successful Irish industrial sectors, will ensure that you are in a pole position to gain employment. Graduates have worked as Research and Development Engineers, Product Engineers, Quality Engineers, Systems Engineers, Clinical Engineers and Product Development Engineers. Others have progressed to PhD research and gained further advancement and recognition.

The increasing harmonisation of European standards and US regulations also ensure that graduates will be employable worldwide.

Entry Requirements:

The normal entry requirement for the MEng programme is an H2.2 level 8 (NFQ level 8 qualification) Honours degree in Mechanical and/or Manufacturing Engineering. Students who do not meet this requirements may enter the programme through alternative routes.
