Course details

This programme focusses on learning how to code in MATLAB and use the MATLAB environment. MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language primarily used for mathematical opertions, known for its easily handling of arrays, matrices and other linear algebra structures and operations. It is often possible to achieve in a few lines of MATLAB, what would take dozens of complicated lines and library calls in other languages. Although geared for mathematical programming, MATLAB can also be easily used for general-purpose programming. The course audience is anyone who would like to learn how to use and program in MATLAB - no prior programming experience is necessary.

Programme Aims and Objectives

This programme will introduce the MATLAB language and programming environment. Students will learn how to use variables, vectors, matrices and control structures. In addtiion, graphing, visualisation, and plotting will be covered. The course aims to have learners be fluent in MATLAB at a basic level, for application at work or in their own business.

Programme Content

The programme will be presented in a structured format by the trainer, and is principally and comprehensively geared towards preparing candidates for using MATLAB in the workplace or in their own endeavours. Lab sessions and exercises will provide working examples of lecture content. Below is a breakdown of the general course knowledge, skills and competence to be gained by attending and participating in this programme:

  • Variables
  • Loops
  • Control structures
  • Vectors
  • Matrices
  • Plotting
  • Visualisation
  • Executables / scripts
  • Subroutines
  • Data files
