Course details

This taught Masters programme is located in a vibrant School of Theology which offers a variety of opportunities for specialized teaching and research in an interdisciplinary context. Theology in MDI is rooted in the Catholic Christian tradition, engaged in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, with a commitment to global and social justice and the promotion of human rights.

Postgraduate programmes in theology are open to students interested in research in the areas of systematic theology, theological ethics, philosophical theology, biblical theology and pastoral theology.

The MA in Theology course is of particular interest to those aiming to progress to doctoral research, but it also attracts teachers of Religious Education, chaplains, clergy and pastoral workers. Persons wishing to pursue theological studies in the context of life-long learning are also encouraged to apply.

MA in Theology Taster Day

Are you interested in our MA in Theology programme? If so, you may find it useful to attend one of our Taster Days. Our Taster Days normally take place in the afternoon/evening and involve you sitting in on some of our lectures. You will also meet with some current postgraduate students and lecturers from various departments.

Modules

Participants who wish to obtain a Master's Award must complete six modules from the following list of indicative modules:

  • Christology in Dialogue with Culture Today
  • Contemporary Continental Philosophy and the Question of God
  • Contemporary Issues in Ecclesiology
  • Contemporary Issues in Ecumenism and Inter-religious Dialogue
  • Eschatology: The Denial of Death and the Eclipse of Hope
  • The Bible Now and Then: Biblical Interpretation in Historical and Contemporary Perspective
  • Philosophy and God: Selected Readings
  • Reading Augustine: Confessions and the City of God
  • Religion and Belief in a Secular Age
  • Sacramental Theology
  • The Church in the City: Early Christian Communities
  • Theological Anthropology and Political Theology: Rahner’s Legacy
  • Theological and Religious Perspectives on Ethics
  • Muslim and Christian Engagement with Faith and Reason

In addition they must complete a Research Module, which includes a minor thesis.

Entry Requirements

  • The general criteria for entry to this taught postgraduate programme is a good honours primary degree or equivalent.
  • Students who do not meet the normal criteria may be considered for a place on the programme on the basis of their work experience and other relevant educational achievements.
  • Applicants seeking Accreditation of Prior (Certified) Learning (APL) for the purposes of entry, module exemptions or advanced entry, or applicants seeking Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) for the purposes of entry or module exemptions will also be considered.
