Course details

Master of Education degree is designed to support the professional development of those holding or aspiring towards leadership position in education. It gives educators the critical space to explore and reflect upon their practices in education, contextualising these experiences within educational theory, pedagogy and policy. It offers an opportunity for critical reflection on what you have experienced and the exploration of new ideas and opportunities in a collaborative environment.

Themes explored within the programme focus on issues of equality and diversity in education and the school as a learning environment. The course enables participants to explore the nature of educational leadership, studying the legislative, resource and policy context in which educational institutions operate, and undertaking a research project on educational leadership. A wide variety of methodologies – lectures, seminars, reflective practice, workshops and policy seminars – is used throughout in a supportive environment.

The course is designed to fit the schedule of educators and involves attendance at lectures at Maynooth University for one evening per week (currently Wednesdays), during the academic terms. Numbers admitted to this course are limited to facilitate collaborative and interactive engagement by participants.

Entry Requirements

The MEd (School Leadership) has been designed to meet the needs of principals, teachers and others aspiring towards leadership positions in education. It will enhance the professional development of educational leaders in a supportive environment, through a reflective exploration of the practice, policy and theory of education. An honours degree or honours postgraduate diploma. Professional qualifications in education and/or equivalent professional experience, along with some experience of leadership in education. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

  • PTE (Pearson): 62
