Course details

This is a full-time course and is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in Childcare. It prepares students with the knowledge and skills to work with babies, young children, families and other staff. This course aims to equip students to work unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity.

Course content

Modules include:

  • Child Development
  • Early Care & Education Practice
  • Child Health & Well Being
  • Early Childhood Education & Play
  • Children with Additional Needs
  • Nutrition
  • Communications
  • Work Experience
  • Occupational First Aid

Please note students will complete the required 8 modules in order to obtain a full level 5 certificate.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should be of Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent, or relevant experience in the area of childcare combined with a strong interest in working with children. Applications are especially invited from mature students. Final selection subject to interview and all applicants may be subject to Garda Vetting.

  • Entry to many degree programme's in childcare and education, e.g. Level 8 - Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Early Childhood Edcation and Care (CW748) at Carlow IT and BA (Hons) Early Childhood Care and Education at Sligo IT (SG242)

Successful graduates of the course are eligible to work in a variety of settings which include -

Certification

On successful completion of the course, candidates who reach the required standard will receive the following awards:

  • QQI Certificate in Early Childhood Care & Education–Level 5 (5M2009)
  • Certificate in Occupational First Aid with Child CPR
