Fundamentals of database management systems. Modern database models. Basic database management concepts. Query languages. Relational algebra and relational calculus. Database design through normalization. Development experience in a team environment.

Course Outcomes:
At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the relational data model supported by most of the database management systems [ABET a].
- Define E-R diagrams and translate them into relational schema. [ABET b, c, k].
- Express database queries using relational algebra and relational calculus. [ABET a, j].
- Write SQL statements to create, modify and manipulate a database. [ABET c, i].
- Normalize a database using the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and BCNF normal forms. [ABET c, j, k].
- Design a relational database schema from a problem statement to conceptual/logical/physical database design. [ABET a, b, c, i, j, k].
- Work effectively within a team. [ABET d].
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing. [ABET f].

About Gulf University for Science & Technology
In the mid-1990s, a group of distinguished Kuwaiti academicians and businessmen realized the vital importance of establishing a modern university in Kuwait equal in quality to other prestigious universities abroad and to serve the ever-increasing educational demands of the local society and the Gulf region. Its primary purpose was to prepare generations of young leaders and professionals for the demands of a new global technological era.
In January 1997, Kuwaiti Academic Group, comprised of 41 faculty members from Kuwait University, was established to lay the foundation for the proposed "University of the Future." Their studies culminated in the vision of "Gulf University for Science and Technology" (GUST).z
