Course details

The aim of this module is to address the needs and requirements of those with a particular interest in the specific area of hand knitted textiles and to also provide a basic introduction to the process of creating materials using hand flat knitting machines.

Entry Requirement

  • There are no specific entry requirements, but applicants will need to demonstrate an inclination towards knitted textiles.

Examinations

  • Continuous assessment will play a central role with a progress review occurring during week 7 of a 15 week term and a formal assessment including presentation of all work generated at the end of each term.

Course Content

At the end of this module, the student can expect to be fully proficient in the process and practice of Hand Knitting, learning a wide variety of stitch structure and colour work techniques alongside other 3D and shaping techniques. The student should also have an understanding of fibres, yarn development and of other textile construction techniques i.e. weaving, felt making, crochet and a variety of relevant application techniques. Design, pattern drafting and instruction writing for hand knitting patterns will also be part of the students learned skills. Hand flat machine knitting will play an important role in the student’s skills and they can expect to be fully capable of producing a wide variety of single bed fabrics together with manipulation techniques at the end of the module.
