Course details
This course employs a variety of written materials as well as class field trips and interview opportunities in order to give students a broad understanding of Arab (particularly Jordanian) society and culture. As always, course objectives focus on developing all four major language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading & writing. Special attention is given to fluency and oral communication skills. All students will be required to write a 10-page paper (in Arabic) based on field research for their final project in the course.
The topics covered in this course will include but are not limited to the following:
- The history of Jordan
- Urban, rural, and bedouin communities
- Urbanization
- Palestinian and other refugees in Jordan
- The Arab family (structure, responsibilities, functions)
- Marriage and divorce
- Women and gender roles
- The role of religion in society
