Course details

The aim of the IOSH Explosion Safety Management (ATEX) course is to give participants technical knowledge on ignition sources, flammability data and the basic principles of different types of protection including containment, separation, construction and design giving the participants useful knowledge and insight into the design of installations and assessment of explosive atmospheres.

Assessment: Theory assessment (20 short answer questions) and an assignment to be completed within of the course completion date

Accreditation: On full completion of this course each participant will receive an IOSH Certificate

Course Aims

The aim of the IOSH Explosion Safety Management (ATEX) course is to give participants technical knowledge on ignition sources, flammability data and the basic principles of different types of protection including containment, separation, construction and design giving the participants useful knowledge and insight into the design of installations and assessment of explosive atmospheres. The course will also give participants an understanding of the requirements for equipment inspection, testing and maintenance.

Target Audience

The course is designed for Health & Safety Managers and Safety Personnel, Project Managers, E&I Engineers, Design Engineers, Maintenance Personnel, Plant Supervisors and Operators requiring the core knowledge to work safely in potentially explosive atmospheres and compliance with the requirements of the ATEX Directives.

Course Objectives

  • Be familiar with the Legal requirements relating to ATEX compliance
  • Know why organisations / companies need to manage Explosion Risks
  • Understand gas and vapour explosion characteristics and dust explosion characteristics
  • Be able to carry out Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)
  • Be able to identify ignition sources
  • Know the considerations for equipment selection in explosive atmospheres
  • Be able to carry out explosive atmosphere risk assessments
  • Understand Explosion Prevention, Mitigation and Control measures
  • Be aware of equipment inspection and maintenance standards
  • Be familiar with the contents of an Explosion Protection Document

On Completion Of The Course Candidates Will Be Able To:

  • Understand the requirement to manage explosion risks
  • Understand Gas, Vapour & Dust Explosion Characteristics and knowledge on the interpretation of flammability data
  • Have technical knowledge of ignition sources
  • Be familiar with basic principles of different types of protection including containment, separation. construction and design and an insight into the design of installations
  • Be able to carry out Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) and establish the size of zones
  • Know the assessment process for explosive atmospheres and carry out Explosive Atmospheres Risk Assessments
  • Understand the Legal requirements relating to ATEX compliance
  • Know why organisations / companies need to manage Explosion Risks
  • Understand Explosion Prevention, Mitigation and Control measures
  • Have an awareness of equipment inspection and maintenance standards and the requirements for inspection testing and maintenance of equipment
  • Be familiar with the contents of an Explosion Protection Document

  • Module 5: Ignition sources
  • Module 6: Equipment selection in explosive atmospheres
  • Module 7: Explosive atmospheres risk assessment
  • Module 8: Explosion prevention, mitigation and control
  • Module 9: Equipment inspection and maintenance standards
  • Module 10: Explosion Protection Document
