Purpose:
- The use of GIS can be illustrated by the “GIS cycle”. Starting with data collection in the real world, data is digitized and structured in a computer database.
- Data from different sources may be combined and analyzed together to yield results that are used for decision-making. The decisions will eventually have an effect on the real world, making new data collection from the real world necessary to update the database. Thus, the GIS-“cycle” will never end as long as there are changes in the real world.
