Developed by Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered approach that elicits behavioral changes by assisting individuals to explore and resolve ambivalence.
This approach is especially helpful with individuals who are less motivated. Research has shown Motivational Interviewing to be helpful with a wide range of client groups and issues.
This intermediate course will equip the attendees with a sound understanding of Motivational Interviewing theory and skills and will build on the theory and skills gained in the introduction course.
PROGRAMME CERTIFICATION
- Certificate in Intermediate Level Motivational Interviewing from The Learning Curve Institute.
PROGRAMME AIMS
The aim of this workshop is to build on and expand the theory introduced in the introduction workshop. The objective of the is to provide space to practice the skills associated with motivational interviewing at a deeper level. This will include scenarios dealing with difficult clients and will naturally lead on to group exploration of the theory, skills and practice of Motivational Interviewing.
PROGRAMME CONTENT
Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of Motivational interviewing appropriate to this level. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and practice Motivational Interviewing through role-plays and scenarios provided by the lecturer.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to Motivational Interviewing within the group.
- To enhance confidence in participants use of Motivational Interviewing Skills, particularly with difficult clients.
- To have a deeper understanding of the Principles of Motivational Interviewing:
- Express empathy
- Develop Discrepancy
- Roll with resistance
- Support self-efficacy
- Avoid Arguments
To provide space and time for participants to become more familiar with Motivational Interviewing and use the following core skills:
- Listening
- Use of Open-ended questions
- Affirming
- Reflective Listening
- Summarising
- Eliciting change talk
- To explore dealing with ambivalence with clients and to develop strategies of working with clients who are stuck .
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of the 2 day Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Workshop through The Learning Curve Institute You can apply to do this course if you haven't done the Introduction to MI workshop but you would need to show some knowledge of the theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment will be carried out through continuous assessment of role plays and listening exercises.
