This Intellectual Disability Studies course will equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the causes, range and effects of intellectual disabilities. Learners will develop an awareness of the importance of a social model of support and the role of various professionals in responding to the needs of persons with an intellectual disability.

Entry Requirements

The requirements for entry to the Intellectual Disability Level 5 (Minor Award) are FETAC/QQI Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Those with relevant life work experience may not need a formal qualification.

A Credit Value of 15 Applies to this course.

Learners who wish to progress to the Nursing profession, for example, Intellectual Disability Nurse, may be interested in taking the Nursing Studies Major Award Level 5 (5M4349) with a credit value of 120.

The Intellectual Disability Course will equip learners with the knowledge and skills to provide care for people with disabilities and for their families in a variety of settings. It will also provide learners with the opportunity to progress to further training and education.

Assessment

The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include examination, continuous assessment processes such as assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstration.
