Course details

The course will cover general infection control and prevention with emphasis on common infections occurring in a Care home setting. The aim is for the learner to understand how infections occur, what the role of the healthcare worker is in terms of prevention and management of infections.

Course content:

Understanding the process of infection:

  • Definition of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi) and basic microbiology.
  • The chain of infection and how nosocomial infections spread between patients and staff.
  • Principles of infection control and prevention, and discussion of applied precautions (standard and transmission based precautions)

Principles of infection prevention and control:

  • The infectious process and symptoms associated with it;
  • Hand washing;
  • Disposal of health care waste materials (sharps, risk waste and non risk waste) and linen management.

MRSA and the development of microbial resistance:

  • Definition of microbial resistance and the development of resistant strains in healthcare settings (MRSA, VRE and C.Diff)
