This programme is designed for new to middle managers seeking to enhance their existing strategic management skills.The turbulent business environment of the 21st century is a source of constant change and intense competition. Managers are expected to respond to these changes with innovative strategic decisions and plans that minimise potential threats and maximise business opportunities.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students should meet the following requirements:

  • Be proficient in English. 
  • Should be in a new to middle management position
  • Must be able to prepare for lectures and engage in self-directed study outside the classroom and be prepared for dynamic discussion in the classroom.

PROGRAMME MATERIAL

  • The short learning programme (SLP) fee includes all programme material, which becomes the property of the student. This material is a valuable source for ongoing reference.

PROGRAMME EVALUATION

  • The completion of a portfolio of evidence or assignment.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

 This SLP aims to achieve the following:

  • Enhance the ability to analyse the business environment, generate and evaluate strategic options for a business.
  • Enhance the ability of critical thinking, creativity and innovation in business decision making.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

Management 1

  •  Understanding the role of management within a business.
  •  The impact of the business environment on business and management.
  •  Management competencies required to manage a business.
  • Understanding the concepts, principles and practices of the main management activities. These activities ensure the desired implementation of plans and include: drafting strategies and plans, organising employee roles and responsibilities, leadership and motivation and relevant control.
  • The introduction to the key business functional departments. These include the Operations, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance and General Management.
  • Types of communication and appropriate techniques for a variety of business contexts. 
  • The compilation of a variety of business documentation using the above principles.

Management 2

  • Internal and external environments that affect strategic management.
  • Formulation of strategic actions using appropriate tools and the implementation of the strategic plans.
  • Improving the ability to review existing and new strategies for further growth. 
  • Evaluation of marketing opportunities in different environments.
  • Competitive and generic strategies for survival against competitors. 
  • Managing products through various stages from introduction to maturity to decline.
  • Customer Relationship Management strategies.
  • Identify and implement marketing strategies to different business scenarios.

CERTIFICATION

  • Strategic Management: Concepts and Practice is a SLP that is certified by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE). Students enrolled for this SLP can apply, on successful completion, for exemption, based on recognition of prior learning, from the equivalent module offered on a full time qualification/SLP module, when registering for the Management Development Programme (exempt from Management 1 and Management 2)*
  • All SLPs available through The Business School have been specifically designed for working adults. These SLPs differ from the full qualifications available through Varsity College which are registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Before registration students must ensure that the programme selected best suits their individual learning and workplace objectives.
