Course details

Education Managers are often faced with the challenge of having to respond effectively to regulatory requirements that govern both the management of schools as well as the teaching and learning processes. Individuals therefore need to equip themselves with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond to such requirements effectively. This short learning programme equips individuals with Whole School Management principles and teaching and learning frameworks in order for them to achieve education management excellence in school operations.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Heads of Department (HODs) and/or School Principals looking to complete a quality professional development learning programme to enhance their management skills.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum of (4) four years teaching experience.
  • Preferably be in a Management position within the teaching environment.
  • Be proficient in English.
  • Must be able to engage in self-directed study.

PROGRAMME EVALUATION

  • Students will be required to complete tests, assignments and an examination.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

This programme consists of five individual modules, each of which are described below:

Whole School Management

  •  Factors influencing the organisational climate within an educational institution. 
  • The influence of socio-economic and political factors on the development of excellence within the school system. 
  • Department of Basic Education National Policy on Whole School Management.
  • Communicate and implement strategies that addresses the current management issues within the South African school context.
  • Assess and interpret the performance of staff members and the subsequent development of strategies that will aid the professional development of educators.
  • The schools' accountability to the community.

Education Mentoring & Leadership

  • The role of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) to drive accountability through performance management.
  • Mentoring and leadership techniques for HODs and Principals to stimulate growth and development for their staff and school as a whole.

School Operational Planning

  • The basic principles of Operations Planning within a school environment.
  • Key challenges and complexities affecting day to day operations.
  • Analyse existing operational processes within a school and make recommendations for enhanced processes and systems.
  • Design an effective operations plan for a school for an entire academic year.

Teaching & Learning Development

  • 21st Century teaching techniques: Blended Learning; The Flipped Classroom; Inquiry Based Learning.
  • Using assessments to drive the learning process.
  • Engage in reflective practice for teaching development.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of teaching techniques to design the learning process for students.
  • Use Web 2.0 tools for technology enhanced learning within the classroom.

Finance for Education Managers

  • Interpret financial information to facilitate informed decision making regarding the various aspects of a school.
  • Budgeting and costing techniques for a school environment.
  • Utilise acquired accounting and financial management knowledge to analyse and interpret financial results to facilitate sound financial and investment decisions.

CERTIFICATION

  • The Education Management Development Programme is a SLP that is certified by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE). All SLPs available through The Business School at Varsity College have been specifically designed for working adults. These SLPs differ from the full qualifications available through Varsity College which are registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Before registration students must ensure that the programme selected best suits their individual learning and workplace objectives.
