ICT Technical Writing L5

Course details

This course equips learners with skills in technical writing specific to the ICT sector. ICT technical writing may involve the production of installation guides, user guides, troubleshooting manuals, technical descriptions of software and online help that are provided in most software applications.

Areas of study will involve technical writing, computer hardware and software aspects as well as web development and desktop publishing.

Participants will acquire computing skills and competencies that will enable them to pursue positions in areas of computing as well as opportunities for progression to further studies.

Entry Requirements

• Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied/Equivalent.
• Applicants of mature years will be considered on their merits.
• Candidates should have good written and verbal English

Technical Requirements

• Genuine interest in Computer Programming/Software and Hardware.
• Overall view/interest in ICT Technical Writing.
• Experience with technology and a word processing program.

Course Outline

The following modules are being considered for the delivery of the Level 5 ICT Technical Writing programme:

• Fundamentals of Programming
• Web Authoring
• Word Processing
• Desktop Publishing
• Software Architecture
• Computational Methods and Problem Solving
• Software Project Management
• Work Experience

Communications

• On the success of a Level 5 technical writing course, it is envisaged that a Level 6 course would be proposed to allow students to progress further. This course would also be tied in with progression schemes in the Higher Education Links Schemes.

Progression

• Students may progress to a range of existing Level 6 computing courses including Cloud Computing, Computer Games Development and Design as well as Networks and Web Design.
• Additionally students may apply to a range of Higher Education Institutions through the Higher Education Links Schemes
• The following are examples of progression routes but should only be taken as a guide: Cork IT, NUI Cork.

Work Experience/Internships

• As already stated, the Work Experience module is mandatory to students and will require them to secure a 2 week work placement. However, in the future, internships on successful completion of Level 5 or perhaps Level 6 may be considered with local industr
