In February the IAPI movie club will take a look at a bio-pic with a difference: David Lynch's The Elephant Man starring John Lynch, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft and John Gielgud.
Produced by of all people Mel Brooks, this film illustrates a remarkable use of sound and imagery in its story telling and is a wonderful example of the extraordinary alchemy that can be created when the right director is attached to a compelling story.
This was only David Lynch's second feature and it was nominated for 8 Oscars. For those of you who feel some of his work can be difficult to access this is one of Lynch's most conventional films from a narrative point of view and makes an excellent jumping off point to appreciate his work.
We will be doing a full analysis of the film and will be revisiting
- Structure
- The protagonist-antagonist relationship
- Visual and auditory rhymes
- Use of sound design (which was a tour de force in this film)
- The importance of theme in bio-pics.
It's a weepie so tissues will be provided at the usual screening time and place in Odessa. We look forward to seeing you there.
