Course details

The aim of this course is to link theory and practice in relation to human locomotion.

This course is designed for physiotherapists wishing to develop their clinical reasoning and treatment skills in relation to the re-education of walking in adults with neurological dysfunction. The tripartitie control of human locomotion will be used as the basis for the practical sessions. Each session will will then link specific aspects of theory to clinical practice. Participants will have the opportunity to practice handling skills, use clinical reasoning within the pateint demonstration session and to discuss clinical issues throughout the day. This course is suited to physiotherapists working with adults with neurological dysfunction in any setting; hospital in-patient, outpatient and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this course, participants will have an increased awareness of:

  • The tripartitie control of human locomotion
  • Clinical reasoning related to gait anlysis.

Participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • Practice a range of handling skills relevant to the treatment of adults with neurological dysfuntion
  • Discuss the selective use of walking aids.
  • Consider the tripartite control of human locomtion
  • The phases of the gait cycle and common defcits experienced by patients with neurological dysfunction.
  • Practical treatment skills
  • Improved awareness of the theoretical background to human locomotion
  • Clinical skill development related to the treatment of adults with neurological dysfunction.
