We are delighted to present the first ever RCPI course to be taught and delivered entirely by SpRs and other Non Consultant Hospital Doctors. They will share their insights and advice on how to survive acute take in General Internal Medicine...

  • A 30 week pregnant woman is brought in by ambulance with a cocaine-induced arrest. Should you stabilise and transfer? When do you end the arrest?
  • A dishevelled 45 year old man is disoriented and drowsy. Does he need an urgent CT, or is he drunk?
  • A 60 year old COPD patient is hypercapnoeic and deteriorating. Can you set up the Bi-pap? Or does he need to be tubed?

Ever come across something on-call that wasn't in any of the textbooks?This one-day workshop has been specially developed for SHOs and Registrars in General Internal Medicine and features practical advice from SpRs who have been there and understand the realities of acute take.

The programme for the day will cover:

  • How to create a plan for the post-call ward round
  • Assessing and managing common presentations on-call
  • Using radiology softwares
  • Non-specific chest pain
  • Side-effects of medications
  • Cath. Lab or Thrombolysis?
  • Respiratory failure, multiple potential aetiologies
  • When to start non-invasive ventilation, when to call the anaesthetist
  • Collapse
  • When do I need a CT stat?
  • Stroke protocols
  • Who needs isolation, and for how long?
  • DNR discussions on call
  • The elderly patient - Multiple problem list
  • Ask the expert: Questions submitted anonymously prior to the course answered by the experts
