Modern businesses are using custom mobile applications to deliver information to their customers quickly and easily. Providing a great app experience is import to a business, providing a portal to relay information to customers and encouraging interaction. The key to the success of any application is a great development life cycle from the initial wireframe concept to final deployment.

This programme is aimed at students with little or no experience with app development and wish to further their knowledge in mobile programming and app development.

Programme Aims and Objectives

To aid the development of a great app, a wide range of functionality is now available to mobile applications in the form of many sensors that are available such as GPS information, cameras, proximity sensors and accelerometers. In addition to this, a wide range of cloud-based services can provide a wealth of information to an app to enhance the user experience.

On completion of this course, students will have acquired the skills to:

  • Set up the required library packages and software for developing a basic app
  • Begin with an initial concept and convert the concept into a set of specifications for an app
  • Utilise available services on the web and integrate them into their app
  • Access GPS and sensor information from a mobile device
  • Access cloud-based services from mobile devices
  • Assess the environments where the app will be running and design a plan to correctly fulfil the needs of the environment
  • Deploy a fully working app to the marketplace

Programme Content

This programme is focused on the complete development life cycle of a modern mobile app. These apps are developed using the latest libraries and functionality available to create an application that can be deployed on a smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to the app development life-cycle
  • Overview of the available technologies for app development including Google Android, jQuery Mobile and PhoneGap
  • Overview of JavaScript, CSS and HTML technologies for developing mobile applications
  • Persistence of data through the use of databases and native file storing
  • Interacting with phone sensors, such as accelerometer and GPS
  • Packaging and deploying your application to make it available to users
  • Monitoring interactions between users and apps, a data analytics approach
