Course details
The aim of the programme is to develop the learner’s palliative care knowledge, attitude and skills thus enabling participants to apply the principles of palliative care in their clinical practice so as to improve the quality of life of palliative care patients and their families.
This programme is divided into four themes, each theme will cover essential aspects of palliative care:
- Introduction to a Holistic Approach to Palliative Care
- Pain and Symptom Management in Palliative Care
- Specialist Palliative Care Services
- Palliative Care Skills
The programme topics include the philosophy of palliative care, sociological and psychological approaches to palliative care, spiritual issues in palliative care, pain and symptom assessment and management, syringe driver workshop, a multidisciplinary team approach in palliative care, ethics, therapeutic communication and specialist palliative care services. The course content will be delivered by the education department and multidisciplinary palliative care teams using a variety of teaching strategies.

Entry Requirements
- Current registration is with the appropriate professional healthcare registration body in Ireland
- Experience in a relevant health care discipline, working with patient requiring a palliative care approach

About Marymount University Hospice
We_They owes its origins to the inspiration of Dr. Patrick Murphy, who from his own experiences living and working in Cork, was well aware of the medical needs of the sick and poor of the city. He had been impressed with the work of the Religious Sisters of Charity in Cork, especially during the Famine, and bequeathed to them whatever remained of his estate on condition that they provide a hospital for the people of Cork.
We_They is a healthcare facility which provides two distinct services. The elderly care facility provides respite care, intermediate palliative care and continuing care for older people. We_They provides care to patients with progressive illness, both cancer and non-cancer, at a time when pain or other symptom issues need addressing. Patients on active treatment may benefit from a short term admission for symptom control and rehabilitation. Support is offered to families facing loss or who are bereaved. We_They is the designated Specialist Care Centre for the Cork/Kerry region serving a population of approximately 600,000.
The facility was founded in 1870 and in September 2011 moved from its long-time city centre location, no longer fit for purpose, to a new purpose built state of the art facility at Curraheen on the edge of Cork city. The new facility provides 44 specialist palliative care beds an extensive ambulatory care/day care facility, accommodation for the community palliative care team, and full educational and library resources. There are 63 elderly care beds and a day care facility on campus.
