Course details

There are no pre-requisites or qualifying test for Level 1000 language modules. But these modules are meant only for students without any prior knowledge. Those who have learned the language through formal and informal means (incl. through external courses, self-study or an extended stay in the target language country) must contact CLS to take a placement test.

Hindi 1 is intended for students who are complete beginners. It is not suitable for students who are:

  • native speakers of Hindi or Urdu
  • students who have studied Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Marati or Punjabi at 'O' or 'A' levels (or equivalents) or have previously undertaken any formal study of Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati or Punjabi for any duration of time.
  • Students who are from India have to provide a complete transcript of subjects studied to prove that they have not taken Hindi at any level.

Module Description

Hindi 1: This module is meant for students with no prior knowledge of the target language. Students with prior knowledge (including spoken proficiency) must contact CLS to take a placement test.

Hindi 2: Hindi 2 is a beginners' module, and is a continuation of Hindi 1. It is an integrated course which will help students gain higher basic proficiency in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), grammar, vocabulary (including Devanagari, the Hindi alphabet), for personal interaction and communication in authentic situations.

Hindi 3: Hindi 3 is a continuation of Hindi 2. It is an integrated module which will help students gain intermediate proficiency in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), grammar, vocabulary for personal interaction and communication in authentic situations.

Hindi 4: Hindi 4 is a continuation of Hindi 3. It is an integrated module which will help students gain higher intermediate proficiency in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), grammar, vocabulary for personal interaction and communication in authentic situations.

Hindi 5: This module builds on the skills attained through studying Hindi 4. The aim is to introduce students to a range of typical forms of Hindi language likely to be encountered in authentic texts such as fiction, news, media, broadcast media and cinema. Issues addressed in the module will include: strategies for the development of higher level vocabulary and the study of advanced Hindi grammar and usage.

Hindi 6: In this module, students build on the skills attained through studying Hindi 5. Students are exposed to a wide range of authentic texts including novels, short stories, print media, broadcast media and cinema. The development of the novel in Hindi will be studied in order to equip students with the tools needed to appreciate contemporary Hindi literature. The relationship between the film industry and contemporary broadcast media will be studied in order to equip students with the skills they need to comprehend complicated discourses in Hindi and engage in communication on contemporary issues in Hindi and studies of Hindi literatures.

Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisites for students who wish to enrol in the following elementary Hindi and Tamil modules: LAH1201 Hindi 1 and LAL1201 Tamil 1. These modules are intended for complete beginners. Students who have received any formal education in Hindi or Tamil previously or have prior knowledge in Hindi or Tamil cannot enrol in LAH1201 Hindi 1 or LAL 1201 Tamil 1 and are required to take a placement test in order to be placed at an appropriate level. LAH1201 and LAL 1201 are the prerequisites for LAH2201 Hindi2 and LAL 2201 Tamil 2 respectively.
