What is the Higher Certificate in Computing course about?

Computers are now an essential part of business life, leading to continuing demand for computer professionals in a wide variety of fields. This certificate in computing has been designed to give you the broadest possible choice in selecting your area of specialisation. Students follow a common first year and then choose one of the following options: Applications; Programming; Networking.

The Applications option involves the assembly and administration of computer systems and the training and support of staff. The Programming option involves the detailed analysis, design and programming of computer software. The Networking option is the practice of linking computers and other devices together and involves the use of hardware and software to enable communication amongst them.

What will I be able to do when I finish the course?

Graduates of the Applications option have a range of employment opportunities including computer systems administration, multimedia, IT support, training and sales. The Programming option leads to employment as Programmers in the world of business, as well as opportunities in the area of software support and sales. The Networking option leads to employment as Network Support Technicians, Network Administrators, and general IT support.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Graduates of the Applications and Networking options may apply to proceed to Year 3 of the BSc in Computer Systems Management (CW217) at IT Carlow. Graduates of the Programming option may apply to proceed to Year 3 of the BSc in Software Development (CW207) at IT Carlow, where you extend and expand your programming skills. From either of these Degree courses, graduates may apply for an Honours Degree course in their area of specialisation here at IT Carlow.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate: subjects at Ordinary Level Grade D3 or better.

Subjects required: English or Irish at Ordinary Level Grade D3 or better and Mathematics at Ordinary Level Grade D3 or better.

Mature applicants: will be interviewed and assessed on an individual basis.
