Course details

This full-time, two-year programme is the fundamental training programme for aspiring professional bar operators.  It prepares participants for entry to the profession in a variety of pubs, cocktail or wine bars, clubs, gastro-pubs, and ensures training in Hygiene and HACCP.

Minimum Academic Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are Leaving Certificate, 5OD3 including English/Irish, or FETAC Level 5 in any discipline.

How long will I have to study?

This is a two year full time programme.  Students attend classes which are a combination of theory and practice, developing both professional skills and an understanding of the business environment.  Work based learning is also an integral component of this programme and students may undertake this in Ireland or abroad.

What will I have to study?

This is a two year full time semesterised programme. There are 4 semesters in total. Semesters 1 and 2 consists of 4 mandatory modules, semester 3 and 3 consists of 4 mandatory modules and 1 elective module.

Learning Outcomes

Throughout the course you will learn practical skills in the areas of bar & beverage service, casual dining, culinary skills, mixology and customer communications. The course also covers the application of business principles to bar and beverage service operations in the areas of marketing, merchandising and sales and cost control.

What is the aim of this programme?

The aim of the programme is to give learners the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to become professional bartenders/supervisors in Ireland or indeed internationally.

Are there follow-up Programmes Available?

Graduates of this programme may be able to progress to year 3 of the Bachelor of Arts in Hotel, Restaurant and Resort Management at LYIT or other related degree programmes.
