Course details

This course is aimed at those who wish to work as a Healthcare Support staff member in a hospital or nursing home. Learners who successfully complete this one year FETAC Level 5 certificate will qualify as Healthcare Support staff, while also having the opportunity to complete Cardiac First Responder (CFR), Emergency First Responder (EFR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) PHECC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council) certified courses. These additional qualifications will provide knowledge and skills in areas relevant to careers in the Fire and Ambulance Services. It is envisaged that this course will improve graduates chances of recruitment to either the Fire Service (CFR and EFR) or Ambulance Service, public or private (EMT). Students may also use this course to apply for Nursing Studies at Third Level.

Award

On successful completion of this course, students will obtain a FETAC Level 5 Award in Community Health Services, 5M4468.

Entry Requirements

A Leaving Certificate or equivalent is required, although exceptions are given to mature students who are over 23 years of age.

Students on this course will also be required to complete a Manual Handling: Patient Lifting and Moving Course and undergo Garda Vetting prior to the commencment of Work Experience.

Communications

Students will learn a variety of communication skills including oral presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, discussion & negotiation skills, internet & e-mail skills as well as structured report writing, document preparation and non-verbal communication techniques.

Work Experience

Each student will develop their job seeking skills to secure work experience either within a hospital or nursing home environment. Students will be trained in CV preparation an interview skills, and will be required to research employment legislation as part of their assessments. They will also be required to undertake a career investigation in their vocational award area.

Students will be required to have successfully completed a Manual Handling: Patient Lifting and Moving course and Garda Vetting prior to the commencement of Work Experience.

Anatomy & Physiology

This module is designed to equip learners with knowledge of the structure and function of the human body and to give a clear understanding of the interrelationship between the systems of the body.

Biology

This module aims to provide the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to independently apply concepts and principles of biology in a laboratory and in the field in a managed environment.

Care of the Older Person

The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to meet the full and holistic needs of older people in a variety of care contexts and to develop an awareness of the increasing needs of older people in the community today.

Emergency Department Care Skills

This module is designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to provide effective healthcare support, not just in the Emergency Department, but in any Department within a hosptial or nursing home, under the supervision of a Registered General Nurse.

Nursing Theory & Practice

This module aims to equip the learner with the theory underpinning nursing professional practice and the caring skills and attitudes necessary for the performance of a range of essential skills.

Occupational First Aid

The purpose of this mdoule is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide and co-ordinate first aid in theworkplace in compliance with therequirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (GeneralApplication) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these Regulations. This module is a good foundation for those who wish to undertake the optional Emergency First Responder and/or Emergency Medical Technician courses.

Safety and Health at Work

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment. Emphasis will be placed on safety and health specifically within the healthcare setting.
