Course details

This course is designed to prepare students to work competently, safely and effectively as a community care worker. Students gain specialisation in the provision of activities for patients in the community and in nursing homes in the area of arts and crafts and fitness and exercise programmes for the clients.

  • A minimum of eight modules must be completed to achieve a major award.

  • Communications (Mandatory)
  • Human Growth and Development (Mandatory)
  • Safety and Health in the Workplace (Mandatory)
  • Work Experience (Mandatory)
  • Arts & Crafts for People in Care (Mandatory)
  • Fitness & Exercise (Mandatory)
  • Activities of Living Patient Care (Mandatory)
  • Occupational First Aid
  • Social Studies

Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent standard of education.
  • Relevant work experience coupled with life experience.
  • All entry is subject to interview.
  • Satisfactory Garda Clearance application
  • Satisfactory medical assessment.

Work Experience

Work experience placement is an integral part of this course. Candidates gain first hand experience by attending appropriate and related work placements within the health-care environment. Garda clearance is essential to participate in work experience which comprises a minimum of 10 days work placement. This course is also available to persons working in the Healthcare sector.

Certification

  • FETAC Level 5 Health Care Activities Organiser (DHSXX)
  • Manual Handling of Patients Certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • FETAC Level 5 Occupational First Aid Certificate

Progression/Career Opportunities

Students who receive their full certification may secure employment in the following areas:

  • Carers in the hospital/nursing home environments
  • Carers in the community
  • Social care workers
