Course details
The Health Service Skills course prepares you for the caring role of Hospital Care Assistant. It equips you with the skills and knowledge to care for patients in a safe and hygienic environment. You will learn the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control. An understanding of the ageing process and how to provide individualised holistic care for the older person is also covered.
A Hospital Care Assistant provides help to Nurses, Doctors and other medical professionals in caring for patients in a hospital or nursing home environment.
The palliative care skills needed to enable Hospital Care Assistants to care for the person diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and assist them and their families in a dignified and holistic way are an integral part of the course.
The Hospital Care Assistant course incorporates the understanding of the concepts of mental age and chronological age in order to be able to relate to people at a level appropriate to their needs. In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to further your personal development and enhance your communication skills.

Entry Requirement
- Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. Acceptance to Full Time courses is interview based, there are no specific points requirements.
