This QQI Level 5 award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence through on and off-the-job intensive training in hairdressing theory, practice and skills to work independently and under supervision in a hairdressing environment and or to progress to further or higher education or training.
Course Content
Hairdressing Theory and Practice
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide effective salon service within a work environment, operating independently while under general supervision.
Hairdressing Science
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with an understanding of the scientific principles underlying hairdressing and to encourage learners to develop safe and hygienic salon work practices.
Safety and Health at Work
The purpose of this award is to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.
Reception and Frontline Office Skills
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence required to carry out reception related tasks and operations as a front line representative in a range of organisations.
Customer Service
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide effective customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, operating independently while under general supervision.
Communications (M)
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in standard everyday tasks and in work-related tasks, operating independently while under general direction.
Work Experience (M)
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks independently while under general direction.

QQI Level 5 certificate in Hairdressing (5M3351). Department of Education and Skills Junior Trade qualification.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC Level 4. For mature candidates (21+) experience will be considered in lieu of academic qualifications.
