Climate change and limited fossil fuel resources mean that demand for Renewable Energy will continue at an ever increasing rate. Renewable Energy is now at the heart of every informed discussion concerning energy sustainability, security and affordability. Houses, offices, stores, schools and other utility buildings have to be heated, cooled, ventilated, illuminated and this consumes a lot of energy. Buildings need to be more energy efficient through insulation, heat recovery from ventilation air, efficient lighting and smart comfort control.

This Fetac Level 5 course has been developed to provide the learner with a good understanding and knowledge base in the area of renewable energy and building insulation systems. It will enable the learners to plan and execute projects of research and investigate recent developments within the renewable energy arena by demonstrating extensive critical understanding of this rapidly expanding area

It covers the production, collection and storage of different types of renewable energy, including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydro, tide and wave.

Modules

  • Building Construction - (5N1570): The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to apply structural principles and techniques to the construction of a domestic dwelling.
  • Communications - (5N0690): This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
  • Design Skills - (5N0784): The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge,skill and competence to understand the strategies inherent in the design process and generate creative responses to design briefs.
  • Renewable Energy Systems - (5N4975): The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to select appropriate renewable energy systems for use in the building sector.
  • Safety and Health at Work - (5N1794): The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.
  • Work Experience - (5N1356): This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Course Info

You'll get your first taste of the world of work and have an experience in a 'live' environment, away from college that will allow you to develop employability skills.

Experience will be gleaned from working independently and/or as part of a team to boost your confidence and develop new capabilities and will help you decide on and plan for a future career in a more realistic and informed way.

The course will provide graduates with a qualification that will help them develop and implement creative solutions to the problems encountered in capturing renewable energy, conversion, storage and management.

Entry Requirements

FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.
