Course details

Generating ideas and learning how to visually communicate those ideas is at the heart of the graphic design course. A variety of projects be it in typography, logo design, illustration or exploring the elements of design all of these skills build and transfer into a solid graphic portfolio for entry into the two year BTEC HND Diploma in Graphic Design.

COURSE CONTENT*

  • Graphic Design Skills, Design Skills, Drawing, Illustration, Computer Illustrated Graphics, Digital Photography, Appreciation of Art, Craft and Design, Work Experience and Communications.
  • Students are also introduced to graphic software, including: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign in the first year.

Entry Requirements:

Leaving Certificate and interview (with portfolio). Mature students welcome.

What type of work should I include for interview for the FETAC Level 5 Foundation Course?

We like to see a broad selection of work which can include some of the following:

  • Sketchbooks 1 or 2 sketchbooks, include observational drawings.
  • 6 Finished drawings for example, the figure, landscape, still life, Imaginary composition.
  • Different media examples could include photography, creative writing projects, craft work, painting, print making, Illustration, digital media created using graphic software, Web Design projects.
  • Two references required.

BTEC AWARD: Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design

COURSE CONTENT*

Generating Ideas for Design projects, Branding and Corporate Identity, Packaging Design, Motion Graphics and Animation for the Web, Typographic Ideas and Typographic Skills, Illustration, Poster Design, Web and mobile App Design, Book Design, Build a design portfolio – for advanced entry to degree level courses or a portfolio for entry into the jobs market.

Software used includes - Adobe CS6 Master Suite, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe After Effects, Premiere.

Direct Entry Requirements For The BTEC HND In Graphic Design

FETAC Level 5 or equivalent with a minimum of four merits, interview with relevant portfolio. Basic working knowledge of Adobe Software, Mature and Postgraduate students welcome.

What should I include in my portfolio for direct entry to the BTEC HND Course in Graphic Design?

  • Overall we like to see a portfolio that demonstrates a good standard of visual skill, creativity,
  • self motivation and experimentation in a variety of media. Which may include drawing, digital media, printmaking, photography, design projects. A large part of the Graphic Design Course involves visual presentation so neatly present your work to your best possible advantage. Present in an A2/A3 size portfolio. Two References required.
