- Location: Limerick Institute Of Technology Moylish Park, Limerick, Ireland
- Duration: 1 Year
Course details
Data mapping, management and analysis are particular needs in the environmental and business context. Applications include environmental monitoring, resource mapping, infrastructure planning, socioeconomic analysis etc. The programme uses real life data from a range of open sources to demonstrate and build the competencies of the learners. Given that GIS is now being applied across a wide range of areas this programme would be a significant benefit for a person who is required to upgrade their existing skills.
People who successfully complete this programme can continue on to study advanced GIS techniques e.g. CIT Masters in GIS or seek employment as GIS Technicians.
A number of students have already secured employment while completing the programme. Evidence of the need for GIS is emphasised by the example of Bord Gáis, a major state utility, tendering for GIS Services in March 2013 in relation to the roll out of Irish Waters services. A number of Local Authorities are also actively engaged with LIT to implement a number of GIS internships and partnerships.
Entry Requirement
Minimum requirements will normally be a pass in six Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics or an equivalent qualification. Equivalence may be demonstrated by an appropriate qualification and significant relevant experience.
Applicants who do not meet these requirements but who are aged 23 and over will be considered for entry on the basis of a written assessment and if appropriate an interview process.
Examinations
On successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (Special Purpose Award). This programme is at NFQ Level 6 and carries 20 ECTS.
While the programme is practically-oriented, it does involve formal academic assessment. Assessment is primarily through the completion of practical assignments though there is one in-class theory examination at the end of the first module.
The assignments require a significant time input. The total time commitment to the programme is estimated at 360 hours (contact time, assignment work, and study).
