Course details

The General Learning Certificate will develop core skills in reading, writing, communications, maths and computers.

Course Subjects

A minimum of eight modules must be completed to achieve full award.

  • Literacy & Life Skills
  • Office Procedures

Year Two

  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Communications
  • Study Skills
  • Preparation for Work
  • Career Information
  • Introduction to Science
  • Art (Optional)

Entry Requirements

  • Relevant work experience coupled with life experience.
  • All entry is subject to interview.

Progression/Career Opportunities

The General Learning Programme provides adults with a fresh start to learn basic core skills needed for employment, further studies and daily life. Small group classes provide an excellent environment to learn new skills and make new friends. A high level of tutor support is available to all learners.

Previous Learner Pathways

Students who have successfully completed a major award at level 4 can progress to FETAC Level 5 courses or Leaving certificate.

About Portarlington Adult & Community Education Centre

It gives me great pleasure to Theylcome you to the Portarlington Further Education Centre. The Centre is dedicated to providing adults with further or ‘second chance’ education and training opportunities. Its ethos is consistent with the profile of its learner population, meaning that its focal point is on the active participation of the learner in the decision making process. Portarlington is focused on providing an environment of study that will enrich the quality of life for both learners and tutors. It also concentrates on enabling learners to engage in life-long learning.
