General English

Course details

The General English courses develop all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and focus on grammar in a communicative context. After the placement test, the student is to be assigned to the suitable class and the learner’s improvement is periodically monitored through tests. At the end of the course, students sit a final test which allows teachers and the Head teacher to decide whether the student can move to the next level or get ready for one of the Cambridge ESOL Examinations. 

What will I learn?

Fundamentals Level 1 & 2

Students are absolute beginners or false beginners. They know almost nothing or little grammar and vocabulary but want to start learning English. The course will focus on basic everyday English, social expressions, vocabulary and grammar useful for general conversation about personal matters. They will deal with the most fundamental language skills.

Elementary Level 3 & 4

Students know little or some basic grammar and vocabulary but want to take the brave step of learning this international language. The language will focus on everyday English, social expressions, vocabulary and grammar useful for general conversation about personal matters, shopping, on the telephone, at the airport and checking into a hotel.

Pre-Intermeidate Level 5 & 6

Students are already able to describe simple ideas and things. They are supposed to widen their vocabulary and develop their grammar. They will learn more about everyday English, such as social expressions and they will be able to describe feelings.

Intermediate Level 7 & 8

Students are confident enough to talk in English but they still make mistakes. They possess a wider range of vocabulary. They will learn more about everyday English, social expressions and informal language in order to give opinions, make requests and offers, express interest and surprise and use a polite register. Grammar is revised from the elementary level and other grammar topics are explored. Learners will also be encouraged to improve vocabulary by looking at word formation, adjectives, synonyms, idioms, and compound nouns.

Upper Intermidate Level 9 & 10

These students are on their way to becoming confident users of English. At this level they begin to express more complex thoughts than before and pronounce using features of connected speech. They will learn how to use a range of everyday English social expressions for everyday English: cross-cultural customs, issues on sport and life and social ceremonies.

Advanced Level 11 & 12

The speaking is at this level more spontaneous as students exploit a range of everyday English social expressions to add emphasis, interrupt, contradict and persuade. They will complete their knowledge of grammar with the perfect forms, participle clauses, complex sentences and discourses, conditional sentences and inversions. They will develop their vocabulary skills by guessing meaning from the context, understanding subtleties in language, collocation, and multi-word verbs. At the end of this course learners may be ready to sit any examinations certifying their grade of proficiency, like the TOEFL, the IELTS or the CPE.
