Furniture Making & Restoration Skills L5

Course details

This course will give participants a broad understanding of all aspects of Furniture Making and Restoration. The course is based heavily on a practical ethos, with a large emphasis on project work. During the course, students will also complete a number of other modules such as combined materials and drawing, which will be of enormous benefit to any aspiring woodworker.

Entry Requirements

• Leaving Certificate (5 passes)
• Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent
• Applicants of mature years will be considered on their merits

Course Outline

Furniture & Cabinet Making

• Learning the necessary skills of cabinet making for the construction of furniture

Restoration

• Acquiring a knowledge and appreciation of antique furniture.
• Assessing the work necessary to restore and repair old and antique furniture

Upholstery

• Using both traditional and modern methods

Finishing & Spraying Techniques

• Preparing wood for final finish using either French polish, Varnish or oil

Combined Materials

• Developing creative skills to make an item of their own choice using a range of materials

Design

• Design and make inpidual pieces of furniture

CAD 

• Drawing Skills
• Communications
• Work Experience

Course Features

• Students may participate in Leonardo Exchange Programme

Progression

• On successful completion of Level 5 students may apply to a range of Higher Education Institutions through the Higher Education Links Schemes.
