Course details

Empowering individuals is a key part of any human service organisation. But what do we mean when we say empowerment? The answers can be quite vague, or aspirational and sometimes do not translate into real, meaningful or practical actions.

This foundation course introduces you to ideas, values and practices around providing the empowering environment through learning. It provides a practical introduction to systematic instruction (a method of helping people acquire skills) and offers an opportunity to acquire some of the key skills that are needed to support people with disabilities who require assistance to learn new skills.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is aimed at Care Workers, Healthcare Assistants, Family and Home Support Workers, Personal Assistants and Community Care Workers and job coaches.

It is ideally suited to a person who is new to the role/area and who wants to understand the broad range of skills you need to provide effective instruction.

Learning Objectives

After successfully completing the course you should be able to:

  • Describe the process by which people learn
  • Identify the issues learning presents for people with disability
  • Explain what meaningful training means
  • Outline Marc Gold’s strategy and describe the supports people with disability require to learn meaningful skills
  • Think critically about your role in facilitating learning so that you may be able to provide better support to people who use your service

Topics covered include:

  • Defining learning
  • Introduction to theories of learning
  • Exploration of how Issues faced by people with intellectual disability when learning
  • Meaningful training
  • What do you and organisations do to support learning?

Qualification

Successful completion of the course will lead to OTC certification. This will qualify you to take more advanced training in Systematic Instruction with the College.
